What about Australia? we hear you say. How could any self-respecting world travellers possibly not visit the land of sunshine, surf and erm, barbies? Well, it's not as if we didn't have somewhere to stay, because Kerry's cousin Richard very kindly offered to host us while we were in the Melbourne area.
With just two months remaining before Doug was due to be back at work in the UK, we had a difficult choice to make. We could either go the way of ten million other world travellers each year, and sheepishly head Down Under. Baaa!
Or...
Or we could go somewhere completely different to everywhere else we'd been already. Somewhere that English was not widely spoken. Somewhere that was not First World, and somewhere that would test our initiative, communication, negotiation, planning and organisational skills. Somewhere just like South East Asia, in fact.
In the end, it wasn't a difficult choice. We had been researching where to go in Australia, and had reached the conclusion that Australia would not be much different from everywhere else we had visited. We had already savoured the beer, barbecues (sorry, braais) and sunshine in South Africa. We had already enjoyed the magnificent mountain scenery of the Canadian Rockies and the shimmering wide open spaces of the United States. And we had already experienced aguably the world's most beautiful cities (Cape Town, Paris and Vancouver), not to mention some we didn't like so much (Florence in particular!)
In the end, we chose South East Asia simply because we felt thrilled about the idea of going there!
