In our opinion, not even Vancouver can match Cape Town for the surrounding natural beauty. One reason why we think that it is such a special city, is that the skyline is dominated by perhaps the most recognisable and distinctive mountain in the world: Table Mountain.

Margaret on Table Mountain

When we were there in October 2002 with Doug's parents, we eventually found the cable car in operation, despite the strong winds over the previous few days. So naturally, we had to go up, despite Margaret and particularly Kerry being terrified. It turned out to be an exhilarating experience for everybody, and afforded us magnificent views over Table Bay and Cape Town.

Upon entering the cable car, Kerry made for the nearest interior railing and grabbed on tight. She was most alarmed when the cable car interior started to rotate. Luckily the operator took pity and allowed her to stand on the central pedestal, which remained stationary.

Abseiling down Table Mountain

Doug returned there in January 2003 with his brother James and their cousin Martin. They all found something different to interest them. Martin was most interested in the varied flora, James enjoyed the spectacular views and Doug was most fascinated by the maniacs abseiling the 1000 metres down the sheer mountainside.
